Description

1,2-Octanediol is a multifunctional additive which can be used as viscosity regulating, wetting agent and skin conditioning agent that lends moisturization, emollience and wetting properties to many cosmetic solutions. It also function as a stabilizer and has been shown to increase the antimicrobial activity of other preservatives.

In fact, it's often used in a preservative blend containing phenoxyethanol and chloroxylenol, named Optiphen. Because of its multi-functioning nature (moisturizer & anti-microbial), Its compatibility with many cosmetic ingredients and its pH-independent broad efficacy against germs allow for the use in a plethora of personal care products such as facial moisturizer, sunscreen, anti-aging treatment, lip gloss, mascara, concealer, cleanser and foundation.

It can be used alone, or used with other ingredients. If it is used with other alkyl diol preservatives, it has strong antibacterial activity. Therefore, it can be used as substitute for nipagin esters and other undesirable preservatives.

Application

Application of 1,2-Octanediol is not limited by the pH . In the course of processing, it can be mixed with water or oil. It is best that it dissolve in aqueous phase at a high temperature (75 ℃). 1,2-Octanediol can be used for cosmetic emulsion system such as cream, lotion, shampoo, as well as other alcohol water system; or for surfactant based systems such as bath gel, bath and shampoo and others. The recommended dosage is 0.3%~1.0%. When used in emulsion, it is first added to water, and extra alcohol or solubilizer can be added to maintain the maximum dissolution in the aqueous phase. The surfactant-containing product with 1,2-Octanediol is transparent. In some cases, 1,2-Octanediol may have an impact on the stability of gels and emulsions. It may reduced viscosity, depending on the emulsifying system, so the  stability should be checked carefully.
